Introducing the SAWO-21
Which Type of Sauna Should You Build?
Before you get into materials and heaters, it's worth knowing what you're actually building. Not every sauna is the same, and getting this right early saves a lot of second-guessing later.
Traditional Finnish sauna vs steam sauna
A traditional Finnish sauna heats the air with a dry sauna heater, using rocks to create bursts of steam (löyly) when you want it, typically running hot and relatively dry. A steam sauna, or steam room, works differently again, using a generator to fill the room with continuous moist heat at a lower temperature.
Barrel sauna vs square sauna
The shape of your sauna affects both how it heats and how it fits your space. A barrel sauna has a curved roof that promotes even heat circulation and sheds condensation naturally, and tends to suit outdoor settings and smaller footprints. A square sauna, or cabin-style sauna, offers more usable interior space and is easier to fit benching, lighting and glass doors into, which makes it a popular choice for indoor installations or larger groups.
Indoor sauna vs outdoor sauna
An indoor sauna integrates into an existing room, bathroom or purpose-built space inside your home, while an outdoor sauna sits as a standalone structure in the garden or on a deck. Both need the same attention to insulation and moisture control, but outdoor builds also need to account for weatherproofing and cladding that can handle Melbourne's climate.
Residential sauna vs commercial sauna
Most of what we cover on this page relates to residential sauna builds for private homes. If you're planning a commercial sauna for a gym, wellness centre or hospitality fit-out, the specifications, heater capacity and compliance requirements are different, so get in touch and we'll point you in the right direction.
What about portable saunas?
If you've searched for a portable sauna, it's worth knowing we don't build these. Portable saunas are tent-style units rather than permanent structures, which puts them outside what we do. Everything on this page relates to a permanent, traditional sauna built to last.

What Actually Goes Into Building a Sauna
Whichever path you choose, every proper sauna build comes down to the same fundamentals. Here's what's involved, and where it's easy to get wrong.
We'll help you with materials and heater sizing.
Sauna Installation and Assembly: What to Expect
Timelines vary depending on your pathway. A DIY sauna kit can typically be assembled over a weekend by two people with basic tools.
A Custom DIY sauna build usually takes a little longer, since it's cut to your specific dimensions, but comes with guidance at each stage so you're never guessing.
A full Custom Sauna Build, where our team handles design, sauna installation and sauna assembly from start to finish, is scheduled around your site and generally completed within a few weeks depending on complexity.
Whichever path you're on, we'll walk you through what to expect before you commit.

Why Build a Sauna? The Health Benefits
Regular sauna use is linked to a range of sauna health benefits, including improved circulation, muscle recovery, stress reduction and better sleep. A traditional sauna's dry heat is particularly effective for encouraging sweating and relaxation, and many people enhance the experience further with essential oils for aromatherapy.
Discover which sauna is the best choice for you.
Caring for Your Sauna
A well-built sauna, properly insulated with the correct vapor barrier and quality sauna materials, needs surprisingly little upkeep. Sauna maintenance mostly comes down to ventilation between uses and a light wipe-down of benching and sauna flooring.
Sauna cleaning should stick to mild, natural products, since harsh chemicals can damage cedar cladding and linger in the heat. We stock sauna accessories to help keep your sauna in top condition long after installation.
We'll walk you through what you need.
