The timeframe between services varies considerably depending upon the type of equipment (sauna versus steam), how often it is used (residential versus commercial) and local conditions.

Care + Safety

• Wiring and repairs must be done by a qualified electrician

• Do not use the heater as a grill

• Do not cover the sauna heater with anything, as it may cause a fire.
• Do not put wood of any kind on the electric heater, or anything inflammable
• Do not use the heater for drying clothes, this easily causes a fire
• Never sit on the heater, as the temperature on the top can be up to 350°C
• Never use the heater without stones, as it can break the heater
• Do not use chlorinated water (e.g., from the swimming pool or a jacuzzi) nor seawater, it might destroy the heater and be dangerous to inhale
• Do not put too much water on the heater; “throw water onto the stones, one to three ladles is enough at a time. After waiting a couple of minutes you can throw little water again” - SAWO sauna guidance for beginners

  • Does regular sauna maintenance extend the lifespan of the sauna & steam rooms?

    Yes, proper maintenance is essential in extending the lifespan of your sauna & steam room, it ensures consistent performance and safety for years to come. Regular maintenance is key to preserving the functionality and efficiency of your sauna/steam room and enhancing overall well-being through regular sauna & steam sessions.

  • Does The Sauna Company provide sauna & steam maintenance?

  • How regularly should a sauna or steam room be maintained or serviced?

    A residential sauna requires a bi-annual service, whilst an annual check-up for residential steam room is often sufficient.  We can provide specific recommendations for your particular configuration.  As a general rule for a commercial sauna, every six months is the recommended timeframe for servicing.  For a commercial steam room, a minimum of three months is advisable, however bi-monthly or even monthly servicing may be required if heavy use or hard scale water is present.

  • How often should I clean my sauna?

    We recommended to clean your sauna regularly, ideally after each use or at least once a month for home saunas. We recommend sitting on a towel in the sauna to absorb perspiration, sweat marks that can show up over time & keeping the floor clean after each use. Ensuring your the sauna is dried out after each use helps maintain cleanliness & longergivty of the cedar timber & hygiene. 

  • What cleaning products are safe to use in saunas & steam room?

    Use mild, non-abrasive cleaners and avoid harsh chemicals. We recommend natural cleaners like vinegar diluted with water or specialised sauna cleaning solutions are ideal. 

    Steam cleaners equipped with steam jets can be used to deep clean and sanitize steam room surfaces without the need for chemical cleaners. Steam cleaners use high-temperature steam to dissolve dirt and kill bacteria they cannot be used in a sauna as the pressure is too strong and can cause damage to the timbers. Ensure all cleaning products are safe for use on sauna & steam surfaces, we recommend testing an area first. 

  • How do I clean sauna benches and walls?

    Wipe down sauna benches and walls with a damp cloth or sponge soaked in mild natural cleaning solution eg: cleaning vinegar. Avoid excessive moisture on wood surfaces to prevent damage. We recommend turning the sauna on for 10-15 minutes to dry it out after each clean. 

  • Can I perform sauna maintenance myself or should I hire a professional?

    Basic sauna maintenance tasks like cleaning and minor inspections for any signs of wear or damage on the heater elements, maintaining the sauna rocks are in good conditdion and not porus for optimal heat distribution can be performed by sauna owners. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for maintenance. However, for complex repairs or any service repairs, electrical work, it's recommended to hire a qualified sauna technician or electrician.   • How often should commercial saunas be maintained?

    Commercial saunas may require more frequent cleaning and maintenance due to higher usage. Develop a maintenance schedule and consider professional sauna servicing schedule to ensure optimal performance and compliance with health regulations.  We can inspect the sauna and discuss a maintenance schedule to suit your business upon inspection of the area.


    We offer bi-monthly and quarterly inspections to our commercial clients as well as tailoring it to each clients individual needs and budget.


  • How often should I replace sauna rocks?

    Sauna rocks should be replaced when they become cracked or deteriorated over time. We recommend replacing rocks annually or as needed to maintain proper heat retention and steam production. The sauna rocks protect the heater elements and maintain the heat in the sauna. Sauna stones may deteriorate faster with the use of essential oils

  • Do I need to oil the outside sauna wood surfaces?

    Yes, if it is kept outside. We recommend oiling the sauna outside surfaces help protect against moisture and enhances the appearance of wood. Use sauna-specific wood oils or treatments and follow recommended application intervals if necessary. Without this discolouration will occur as well as movement within the timber overtime naturally. No oiling is required of inside timber surfaces. 

  • Should I inspect the sauna electrical components regularly?

    Yes, if it is safe to do so.  Turn off power before performing any maintenance or inspections.If you notice any corrosion or damage upon remove the rocks to the heating elements. If the sauna is not reaching desired temperature, or it is not heating correctly,it is likely a service is due. We can arrange a service technician to inspect sauna electrical components for signs of wear, loose connections, or corrosion.

  • How do I maintain sauna temperature and humidity levels?

    Calibrate the sauna thermostat regularly to ensure accurate temperature control. Monitor humidity levels with The Sauna Companies hygrometer to measure humidity levels accurately and adjust ventilation as needed to maintain comfortable sauna conditions.

  • How do I troubleshoot common sauna heater & steam generator issues?

    Refer to the manufacturing manual specifically to the sauna model & make for troubleshooting tips. If you are unsure, contact The Sauna Company staff to arrange a certified sauna/steam technician to assistance further and inspect the issue.

  • Where can I find sauna & steam maintenance supplies?

    We specialise in all SAWO products, parts, heaters, steam generators, controls  and accessories. We have a range of Sauna maintenance supplies such as sauna stones, SAWO parts, SAWO sauna heater elements, SAWO steam generators and cleaning solutions, which can be purchased from The Sauna Company in Melbourne, Victoria.

  • How much does servicing cost?

    We have a service call out fee ranging from $230 to $330 which is determined by your location & then the technician is charged out as an hourly rate plus parts


    We offer discounts to clients that purchased from the sauna company as well as clients that lock in regular servicing contracts. We service across Melbourne and Victoria.
